Iranian Dastgāh music is a part of the broader Maqam music tradition, with the concept of space in music directly tied to the mode being used. Improvisation in Iranian Dastgāh music requires a balance of creativity and adherence to rules, making it a challenging yet rewarding endeavour.

Through improvisation, musicians are able to create new concepts within the framework of traditional music, much like using language to express ideas fluently without premeditation.

Pouyan’s latest release, Parchin (hedge), on Nava Label, was BBC Music Magazine’s Album of the Month choice in April 2025.
